Theatre Revolve 2006/102 To empower girls ages 18 - 22 through the creation of live theatre, artistic training, mentorship and leadership development. Based in Toronto, the initiative culminates in an international collaboration with the Corporacio Colombiana de Teatro, Artistic Director Patricia Ariza, and a group of girls who are former child soldiers in Bogota Colombia.
Anishnibek of the Gitchi Gami (filed under ecosuperior 2006/119) To support youth-led assessment of community hazardous waste/air contaminants issues, educate peers/leaders and develop air contaminants reduction strategies for Fort William First Nation. This initiative is in partnership with the Anishinabek of the Gichi Gami (formerly the Community Group for Environmental Stewardship).
Myths and Mirrors (filed under Canary Research Institute-2006/081 and 2007/163) Earthly Matters is a project designed and implemented by young people in Sudbury who are concerned about their local environment. They will engage other youth in art projects, discussions and workshops about the problems and the solutions to pollution and soil contamination. Together, they will create public artworks inspired by their research, leading up to a coordinated and public youth response to the state of our local environment.
South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (thru LAMP) The South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA) was founded by a group of youth in that community in 2000. SEYA is a youth-led organization that provides creative and innovative ways for youth to reach their full potential. SEYA is working on a campaign to address the lack of a recreation centre and accessible programming for youth in the South Etobicoke community. Youth will develop, distribute and compile the findings of a needs survey to make change.
Youth in Power (thru Schools Without Borders) Youth In Power (YiP) is a youth-run group formed by the Toronto Community Housing Corporation in 2004 after conducting a series of TCHC youth forums. The group is working toward autonomous existence from the TCHC. YiP members come from TCHC communities. Their mandate is to identify and address issues that affect youth in TCHC communities. YiP is working toward autonomous organizational status, to become a charitable organization that can be a resource for youth groups from across the TCHC communities.
Beatz to da Streetz Beatz to da Streetz (B2DS) is a Toronto-based youth-led non-profit arts program that aims to empower youth 16-24, using urban music. A team of 4 youth work with an adult coordinator to plan and implement programming. Youth are actively involved in governance and decision-making in the organization. Beatz to da Streetz, in partnership with Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre, will create a collaborative music video managed by youth that raises awareness about issues that youth face while giving them hands-on skills and experience to strengthen their leadership role within their organizations.
