Peterborough Green-Up provides to the community of Peterborough knowledgeable and experienced educators promoting sustainable living. "Peterborough Gets A Move On!" was a multi-component project that sought to maximize the effectiveness of the air quality, transportation and children’s health message with concurrent projects and media exposure. Some specific activities include:

  1. "On the Bus" Workshop: a unique and interactive curriculum-linked workshop for elementary students promoting the importance of active and efficient modes of transportation.
  2. Student driven Anti-Idling Campaign Pilot Project: an initiative to empower students with the knowledge and resources to educate their school community on the impacts of vehicle emissions on their health.
  3. Smog- Alert: a community presentation on both the challenges and solutions to poor air quality and the impact on children’s health in the Peterborough region.

This was a very successful project with outcomes greater than predicted. Some of these outcomes included:

  • 594 elementary students participating in the "On the Bus" workshops
  • 2 schools developing student directed anti-idling pilot projects
  • 50 people attending the community presentation on air quality and health

Why was this community project so successful?

  • it expanded upon previous experience, capitalizing on community resources and using community based social marketing tools to create innovative, interactive and comprehensive sustainable transportation modules that celebrated the assets of the community of Peterborough while presenting practical information.
  • it promoted and distributed these modules throughout the City and County of Peterborough using Peterborough Green Up’s well-established reputation, community contacts and experience
  • it developed strong partnerships with community organizations and initiatives invested in various components of the sustainable transportation message
  • it reinforced and promoted the objectives of all of these groups throughout module implementation and project promotion.

"Peterborough Gets A Move On!" is a successful community engagement project that showcases how an NGO can effectively participate in a City’s sustainable transportation planning process by developing activities targeted for key segments of the population - notably children and youth. By using the strategies outlined above, Peterborough Green-Up was able to maximize on the delivery of the significant message of air quality, children’s health and transportation.
